In "Patient Zero" Django gets exposed to a deadly virus in the Texas music festival and falls ill along with his father. His father dies before a cure is discovered. His mother gets sick after going inside the quarentine camp without any protective gear on to console Django after his father died. Nelson forms an attachment towards Django when he collects tissue samples from him to send to his father Dr. Cassidy. He is later given a vaccine that saves his and his mother's life.
